Wheelchair tennis juniors roll in for camp

ELLIS PARK - The sixth International Tennis Federation Johan Cruyff Africa Junior Camp is all set to develop future wheelchair tennis champions.

The camp, which will take place at the Ellis Park Tennis Stadium from 28 September to 1 October, will see junior wheelchair tennis stars rolling in from all over the continent to receive high quality skills development and exposure on the international court. Leading the camp and imparting their skills to the future stars will be national coach Kgotso Matshego, as well as top coaches from South Africa, Egypt and Tanzania.

The camp aims not only to improve the juniors’ level of play, but to earmark high-performing nations and identify Africa’s next top talent. Coaches will focus primarily on tactics and advanced mobility drills, while a concurrent tournament will give the players an opportunity to display their skills. A coaches’ conference will run simultaneously with the camp and the tournament, providing coaches with the opportunity to exchange ideas and gain knowledge.

“The Johan Cruyff Africa Junior Camps have been instrumental in providing opportunities for top junior players to be identified and be fast-tracked,” said Matshego. “Kgothatso Montjane, Lucas Sithole, Evans Maripa and Thato Tsomole, all 2013 SA Sport Awards winners, have been part of this remarkable initiative.”

Camp director Siyabulela Nkachela added, “The camps are not only designed to benefit the top junior players, but will give talented players identified at the regional camps the opportunity to rub shoulders with the top junior players and ensure that in time they are amongst the best in South Africa and the world.”

Wheelchair Tennis South Africa is officially sponsored by the Airports Company South Africa, which has contributed no less than R24 million to the sport to date and has committed to a continued investment in the sport as its flagship Corporate Social Investment programme.
