Police bust ID fraudster

BIRNAM – Norwood police apprehended a foreign ID thief following the theft of four vehicles on the same day at a car dealership in Birnam.

Police spokesperson, Constable Nonzwakazi Tsoanyane said after the vehicles were taken at gunpoint, the dealership decided to conduct lie detector tests on their employees. The test had come out positive on one of the employees who had allegedly used an identity document which did not belong to her.

Tsoanyane said the employee had fraudulently acquired the ID book of Dudu Zondi, pasted a photo of herself over the original, and used it to get employment. Upon further investigation, police established the employee was actually a Zimbabwean citizen.

This was the second incident of identity fraud in the suburb within a month. Police urged employers to verify their employees’ identity with the department of Home Affairs before appointing them, which could lead to more arrests.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court soon. Tsoanyane called on anyone who knows Zondi, the original owner of the ID, to come forward.
