John Kani honoured by Foxwood Theatre

HOUGHTON - MULTI award-winning actor, director and playwright, John Kani, was recognised for his passion and commitment to the arts.

Kani was honoured at the Foxwood Garden of Fame and was invited to embed his hand prints in a stepping stone to be placed in the gardens.

Before calling him up to lay his hand prints in the stepping stone, Foxwood’s owner and manager Jan Groenewald read a letter written by his partner Sandra Prinsloo who had worked with Kani on stage. Prinsloo conveyed her admiration for the actor and said she was privileged to have been part of his career.

Kani, who refers to himself as a working artist and not a celebrity, said he was honoured to be recognised by Foxwood Theatre in such a manner.

“Arts have played an important role in my life. These are the little things that let me know that people are listening and that I should keep working,” he said.

“Years from now, my grandchildren can come to the Foxwood Theatre and show their friends why their grandfather was well-known.”

Before placing his hands in the cement box, Kani told the audience how he became a storyteller and of some of his work that set a precedent for other actors in South Africa.

Renowned songstress Abigail Khumalo serenaded the audience at the ceremony in honour of her good friend, Kani.
