Pet owners warned of fireworks display

UPPER HOUGHTON - The Sandton SPCA has warned all residents of the Houghton area and surrounds of a fireworks display at St John's College on 27 September.

St John’s College will on the day host a family event, On the Night, which will include the display of fireworks at 7pm.

The SPCA said it was only made aware of the event on the morning of 26 September and had since tried to find out if the event had a valid permit. Due to the unavailability of individuals responsible for municipal and environmental matters at the City of Johannesburg, this was not possible.

A few residents have voiced their concerns about the fireworks spectacular.

Andrew McMurray said he found it a little distasteful that a place of education was encouraging the promotion of fireworks.

“The noise and distress that this display is going to cause to animals around the vicinity seems insignificant to the school governing body and organisers, who are only interested in their fundraising initiative,” he said.

Concerned resident, Taryn Coghlan who is calling for the ban of fireworks nationwide, said she was saddened that St John’s would hold a fireworks display with no regard for animals, wildlife and people in a 5km radius.

St John’s headmaster Roger Cameron responded to the complaints and said, “We take our role as responsible corporate citizens very seriously. On the Night fireworks display has been taking place for the last 15 years with great success and support from the community. The event has kept pace with all legislative and bylaw requirements and currently enjoys the support of some 7 000 spectators.”

Cameron said the school had the support of its residents and were sensitive to the needs of the community. “We ensure that we timeously inform all residents about upcoming functions such as the fireworks, taking their needs and suggestions into consideration,” he added.
