Celebrate Heritage Day at the Parkview Literary Festival

PARKVIEW - PARKVIEW Residents’ Association is hosting ParkWords, Parkview's Literary Festival, on Heritage Day 24 September.

The purpose of the day is to celebrate the remarkable literary talent in Parkview and surrounding suburbs.

Informal literary talks and debates will take place throughout the day at the library in Tyrone Avenue with topics such as journalism, Johannesburg, heritage, education, politics in South Africa, politics in Africa, history (World War I), fiction, business, travel, ‘So you want to be an author?’, food, motor sport, and life and death.

Some restaurants, including Scusi, Croft and Stelle will also be used for some of the talks while other activities, including those for the little ones, will take place in the library parking area and Weber House in Parkview.

There is a long list of participating authors and literary minds giving their time for free during to festival, including Indra de Lanerole, Anton Harber, Justice Malala, Jessica Pitchford, Tanya Zack, Nechama Brodie, Laurice Taitz, Jonny Steinberg, Mary Metcalfe, Brahm Fleisch, Stephanie Matseleng-Allais and many more.

Attendance is free and will be on a first-come, first-served basis as there will only be 40 to 60 seats available per venue.

Activities that will take place throughout the day will also include a one-hour heritage walk through Parkview with Dennis Adams and Raymond Cordosa. The tour will start with the unveiling of a Johannesburg Heritage 2014 blue plaque.

  • Parents are encouraged to bring their children as entertainment for youngsters will be available.
  • Children’s story time – readings by Parktown Girls and St Theresa’s (see programme for details) at 10am and 2pm
  • Teenager’s writing workshop hosted by All About Writing, and facilitated Mandy Collins for pupils in Grade 8 and upwards at 11.30am
  • Jumping castles and balloon sculptor (supplied by Pam Golding Properties)
  • Buskers and face painter (supplied by the Business Owners’ Association of Parkview)
  • Bookmaking at the library – Children will be offered the opportunity to create a book with their own unique voice. All materials will be supplied by the library. All age groups welcome
  • Watch out for the Gruffalo visiting Parkview for the first time.

Books will be on sale and attendees are requested to bring used books to the library for the library to resell to raise funds for new ones.
