Crime stats: Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle decrease

JOBURG – Rosebank and Parkview police have significantly decreased the number of thefts of motor vehicles and motorcycles according to the latest crime stats.

On 19 September, Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega and Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko released the 2014 crime stats which revealed that murder and contact crimes incidents had increased in the country.

According to statistics released on the South African Police website, a total of four murders were reported at Rosebank and Parkview police stations during the period of April 2013 to March 2014. An equal number were reported between April 2004 and March 2005.

Rosebank
Rosebank police managed to decrease the number of thefts of motor vehicles and motorcycles to 87 from 288 in the 2004/5 financial year. Burglary at residential premises has also decreased to 75 from 174.

Other crimes on the decrease were malicious damage to property, which went down to 66 from 120. While carjacking with aggravated circumstances went down to 5 from 15 in 2004/5.

Crimes on the increase include 10 sexual crimes which were reported, up from seven in 2004/5. Drug-related crimes are also on the increase with 20 cases, up from eight. 29 perpetrators were caught driving under the influence of alcohol, from 10 in 2004/5.

Parkview
Parkview police have managed to bring burglaries at residential premises down to 313 from 849 in 2004/5, while thefts of motor vehicle and motorcycle were at 428 from 630.

Robbery at residential premises has increased to 115 from 62 cases in 2004/5. There has been a significant increase in the number cases of driving under influence of alcohol, 229 drivers were caught, while 19 had been apprehended in 2004/5.

There were six reported cases of kidnapping reported at Parkview police between April 2013 and March 2014, while none were reported in 2004/5.
