Women appeal for wool

Knitting group, the Knitting Knuts have run out of wool and have appealed to members of the community for assistance.

Sydenham resident Hilary Sassen told the North Eastern Tribune that for 20 years, a group of about 20 women have been knitting and donating the finished items to charity.

She said the members knit from the comfort of their own homes and get together once all pieces are finished. “After all the knitting is complete, we host a tea party for the women to thank them. The pieces are also collected and then donated to charity organisations,” said Sassen.

She appealed to the public to donate wool to the group so they could carry on knitting for the needy. “We would be more than happy to collect it from you. So, anyone with wool to spare can contact us,” she said.

Sassen and Doris Pollak are the founding members of the group.

The women distributed the pieces knitted last year to worthy causes around Johannesburg. Beneficiaries include organisations such as Choc, the Hospice shop, and the Nokia Children’s Fund. Families from informal settlements as well as patients from the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto also benefited.

Sassen said the group now wanted to start preparing for winter 2015 and needed help from the community to do that. “We would really appreciate any wool that anyone can spare,” she added.
