Residents beat up robbery suspects

YEOVILLE - TWO burglary suspects are in hospital under police guard after Yeoville community members chased and managed to catch the two men and assaulted them.

Residents beat up the suspects before handing them to the police after they had allegedly tried to commit a burglary and damaged property in the process.

According to police, the incident took place in Raleigh Street. The complainant stated that he was inside his home when he heard a noise at the door and went to check. He said he found three men trying to force the burglar gate open with crowbars.

Yeoville police spokesperson Constable Thabo Malatji said, “The complainant screamed and the suspects started to ran away. Members of the community chased them and managed to apprehend two of the suspects and one managed to slip through their fingers and fled the scene.”

Malatji said the police were called but the two suspects had been assaulted by the community by the time the police arrived. The suspects were taken to hospital.

Malatji added, “We appeal to members of the community not to take the law into their own hands, and to [rather] hand over the suspect to the police so that they can be brought to book.”
