Help outrun cancer and participate in race

Spar has called on women runners to help outrun cancer in the Spar Women's Challenge on 12 October.

The challenge, dubbed Joburg’s most beautiful road race, will coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

With the Joburg Challenge as the last of the five challenge races that make up the Spar Grand Prix, there are big prizes up for grabs for the winners and runners up,

however the most important part of the race is really about the thousands of women

who will take to the streets in support of cancer.

During the race launch at the Wanderers on 2 September, Spar’s marketing manager, Martin Webber said proceeds from the race would go to Reach for Recovery, a support group for women who

have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Veteran Spar Challenge runner, Sonja Laxton who will participating for the 83rd time, said the race was a great way to raise awareness about the deadly killer, cancer.

“The race gives women the confidence to participate because no matter what happens, the first person to cross the finish line will be a woman either way,” she said.

“Breast cancer is a killer among women and it is because of the support given by the kind and generous sponsor [Spar], we are able to raise awareness with hopes that more women will self-examine and hopefully catch the cancer before it is too late.”

At the launch, Laxton said her reason for running this year was “for any person who has felt the knife of cancer and for our friend Priya, a breast cancer survivor”.
