Adapt or Fly coming to Market Theatre

JOBURG - Pieter-Dirk Uys is adapting.

He is returning to the Market Theatre where it all started for him in 1981. Then it was Adapt or Dye; now it is Adapt or Fly.

After 30 years performing for South Africans, and now the most famous white woman in South Africa, his alter-ego Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout leads a satirical piece that includes the Leader of the Unofficial Opposition, Julius Malema, former apartheid minister Pik Botha, kugel Nowell Fine, Mrs Petersen from the Cape Flats, the old Krokodil PW Botha, and Madiba, our dancing First Citizen, to put the smile back onto tense faces.

In a time of economic depression, recession, fear and anger, what is better and more healing than a good laugh at the expense of those who depress, recess, frighten and annoy us?

Uys celebrates the upcoming 21st year of our rainbow democracy with Adapt or Fly, his one-man show that has taken South Africa by storm.

Reflecting the recent months of radical change in South Africa through political paralysis after the May elections, right up to a long-winding road via the public protector’s office to National Key Point Nkandla, Uys wants to prove once again that if the people bother to lead, the government will have to follow.

With the ruling party now for the first time having to protect its left flank from a new rooi gevaar, the nation can only watch in wonder at the fascinating ups and downs of South African politicians in the shared bed of democracy.

Do we now face another two years of non-action in preparation for the 2016 municipal elections? To what do we adapt to? Or do we rather just fly?

The show is on at the Market Theatre from 1 to 26 October.
