Ghandi’s house one South Africa’s top destinations

The former home of Mohammed Gandhi, Satyagraha House has been awarded the 2014 Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence.

The modest thatch-roofed house is situated in the neighbourhood of Orchards in the heart of Johannesburg where Gandhi lived a century ago.

Gandhi lived in South Africa for 20 years and spent more than a year in this house. It is at this house that he formulated his satyagraha, a passive resistance that calls for no violence.

The house, now a museum and hotel, offers a near personal encounter with Ghandi and his significance in human history. A visit to the museum includes meditation, yoga and vegetarian meals. This year Satyagraha House was listed as one of the 50 top tourist attractions in South Africa according to Travel Start.

Satyagraha House is the third most popular tourist site in Johannesburg after the Apartheid Museum and the Gautrain according to Travel Start.
