City Power suspends cellphone mast project

PARKVIEW - City Power has temporarily decided to suspend its project to install cellphone masts in Joburg North.

This comes after Parkview and Greenside residents complained about MTN masts being erected outside their properties without any consultation.

Parkview resident Karen Heese said she had been given no notification about a cellphone mast that was erected directly across her home on the corner of Carlow Road and Westcliff Drive.

In August, cellphone network company, MTN announced it was in the process of deploying antennas on street lamps and pole masts to improve network coverage and quality.

This was part of a project that City Power had implemented after it had installed about 50 000 smart meters across the city which were experiencing reception problems.

MTN was in turn awarded a tender to install antennas to counteract some of the problems that had occurred.

Ward 87 councillor Amanda Forsythe said councillors and residents were not told where the masts would be installed and were not given the opportunity to participate in any discussions on the project prior to its approval.

According to Forsythe, initially the project involved Bryanston, Saxonwold and Randburg and she was only informed of other suburbs being included only after she requested more information from City Power.

“While many people are keen to have better cellphone signal in their area, there are very few who would like such a mast installed outside their home and some have concerns about the radiation exposure impact on their health,” said Forsythe.

“Due to this discontent, it seems that City Power has temporarily decided to stall the project until further notice and the councillors of Region B have requested a meeting with those responsible for the project to discuss all the above concerns.”
