A woman found herself behind bars after she allegedly tried to defraud Capitec Bank of R200 000 in its Balfour Park shopping centre branch.

According to the police, the bank service consultant on duty was approached by a woman who wanted to apply for a loan of R200 000.

Norwood police spokesperson, Constable Nonzwakazi Tsoanyane said the consultant told the police that he asked the woman to submit her payslip, identity document and bank statement as part of bank loan application requirements.

Tsoanyane said, “Before the consultant processed the loan application, he took the documents to his manager because the company name in the payslip looked suspicious. He said they sent the documents to their insurer which alleged that the documents were fraudulent and the loan was not approved. The consultant didn’t tell the applicant as to what transpired but told her that she can go home as the bank will call her.”

The woman allegedly came back three days later as she didn’t receive the call from the bank. Tsoanyane said, “The woman came back to inquire about the loan but the consultant called the police as the documents she had were fraudulent.” The police are investigating and the suspect was expected to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court soon.
