KEPS shows support for J9 Foundation

King Edward Primary School joined millions around the world in taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is also known as motor neuron disease.

Organised by Rene Marks, the event took place on 9 September on the school grounds.

Marks said the school raised over R3 000, which was donated to the J9 Foundation, an organisation founded by former Springbok player, Joost van der Westhuizen after being diagnosed with the disease.

The foundation was represented by Claire Kaye-Grobler and Van der Westhuizen’s brother, Pieter, who addressed the pupils during the event.

The school challenged all teachers in Gauteng to take up the challenge in support of the foundation.

Addressing the pupils, headmaster Doug Shead challenged them to take up the challenge in the comfort of their homes. He said, “I challenge every one of you to take up the challenge and ask someone to record a video while you do it and then bring it to the school.”

The challenge started in the United States and aims to raise money for organisations supporting people living with ALS.
