Pedestrian killed after taxi crashes into block of flats

HILLBROW - A pedestrian was killed and many were seriously injured in Hillbrow when a taxi plunged into a block of flats.

According to police the taxi was driving down Claim Street when its breaks failed. The driver lost control and the taxi veered off the road crashing into a building before knocking down the pedestrians.

The incident took place at Montreal Mansions on the corner of Smit Street.

Hillbrow police spokeperson, Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo said the pedestrian was certified dead on the scene. Zondo said, “The taxi was full [of commuters] during the accident and the passengers were seriously injured. They were taken to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.”

Zondo added that emergency personnel used the Jaws of Life to rescue the driver from the wrecked minibus.
