Residents urged to join security initiative

Chairperson of the Bramley Safety Initiative, Diane Binns has appealed to residents in the suburb to join the initiative.

Started in 2008 by concerned residents, the main aim of the scheme was to eradicate crime.

Binns told the North Eastern Tribune that the scheme was in partnership with security company ADT. “The company has allocated guards as well as a 24-hour patrol vehicle which is visible in the area at all times,” said Binns.

She added that the initiative was beneficial to all residents although only 100 were active members.

Binns further urged residents to come forward and sign up for the project. She said, “The more people we have in the scheme, the less the amount of money residents will pay.”

One of the initiative’s success stories was a recent arrest of a would be thief who entered a property on Junction Road. Binns said, “A neighbour saw a suspicious looking man enter a house and immediately phoned the guard on duty. Within minutes he was on the scene and handcuffed the man and handed him over to police.”

Wellington Baloyi was the reaction officer who made the arrest. He told this newspaper that he was proud to have been a part of the project. He sent a stern warning to criminals in the area. He said, “I always stay vigilant because criminals are smart and have new tricks everyday. I stop and search the so-called informal recyclers to check what they actually have in their trolleys as some of them use the trolleys to transport stolen goods.”

Binns said her organisation had good relations with the Bramley police and Community Policing Forum.

She encouraged members of the community who wished to sign up for the initiative to contact her.
