Biker hospitalised after near-fatal crash

HOUGHTON – A motorbike rider suffered multiple second-degree burns after his bike collided with a panel-van in Houghton.

The accident happened at the intersection of 5th Street and 11th Avenue on the morning of 3 September.

Solly Thaisi, an eyewitness, said the van and motorbike had been travelling west along 11th Avenue before the accident happened.

Thaisi claimed the van was turning north into 5th Street when the bike tried to overtake and the vehicles collided. Thaisi added that the biker had a visible injury to his leg and another bystander had helped him take off some of his clothing which was on fire.

EMER-G-MED paramedics transported the 40-year-old biker to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital in Parktown after he was found in a critical condition.

EMER-G-MED paramedics were among the first on the scene and found the 40-year-old biker in a critical condition: he had an arterial bleed to the femur and a possible fracture. Spokesperson, Danielle Dooley said the bike landed about 30m from the scene of the collision and the rider was about 15m away.

“Paramedics treated the patient who was in a critical but stable condition on scene. As a last resort to stop the arterial bleed they applied a tourniquet. He was transported to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital [in Parktown],” said Dooley.

11th Avenue had been closed off to traffic as police were on scene to gather information about the accident, it was later opened after the scene was cleared.
