Rotary gives back to community

ORANGE GROVE - The Orange Grove Rotary Club donated a container to Iputheng Primary School in Alexandra.

The donation followed after the organisation’s community services committee asked the principal, Mike Thobejane if his school needed a container. “A quick answer was ‘yes’,” said Steven Anastopoulos, the organisation’s communication officer.

Thobejane decided that the container be used as a library as there was no storage space for books in the school’s building.

The land adjacent to the school was cleared and the foundation for the container was prepared.

Anastopoulos added that the club had obtained the container from the Humanitarian Centre in Bedfordview and delivered it to the school grounds last year.

He said, “A door and windows were cut open and painted inside and out, electricity cables and a camera were installed, shelving for books were also put on the walls.”

A pupil from the school volunteered to be librarian for the next three years. “Now in addition to the library, the children have a larger playing field and a roofed area,” said Anastopoulos.
