Residential burglaries worries police

Norwood police are concerned by the spate of house burglaries in the precinct and warned residents to be more vigilant.

This after four cases of burglaries were reported in a week. According to police, in one of the latest incidents, a complainant in Pretoria Street, Oaklands reported that suspects entered the premises by forcing open the gate.

Norwood police spokesperson Constable Nonzwakazi Tsoanyane said, “The complainant told police that she was at home and all the windows and doors were closed and locked. Everything was in order until the complainant noticed that there were people inside the house.”

Tsoanyane said the complainant who lived in a cottage on the property alerted the police and her employer. The complainant noticed that the main door of the house was opened by force. The robbers stole a flat screen TV, two speakers and a small radio, all valued at R40 000. The suspects were still at large and police asked anyone with information about the incident to contact the police.

In another burglary in Highlands North, a woman locked her house doors and the gate and left home. Tsoanyane said later the woman received a call from a security guard informing her that they had received a signal that there was something wrong at her house. “It’s alleged that the security guards went to the house and found that the gate was forced open,” said Tsoanyane. A Samsung plasma TV, jewellery, handbags, clothes and linen were missing, all to the value of R55 000.”

Tsoanyane added that residents needed to be more careful when they left their homes. “We ask them to make sure that they take all the precautionary safety measures. They must also report to their security companies that they are going out and no one is at home.”
