Jazz on the Lake pays tribute to Brenda Fassie

THE Johannesburg Arts Alive International Festival 2014, Jazz on the Lake Concert gave the spring season a warm welcome.

The free concert took place on the 31 August at Zoo Lake.

The multi-talented line-up of great local artists included contemporary jazz artist, Mbuso Khoza; acapella trio, The Soil; talented vocalist, Vusi Nova; and Limpopo reggae star, Colbert Mukwevho. International acts included Afro jazz muso Josh Meck from Zimbabwe; Remna Schwarz (Cape Verde) and Vidya Shah (India).

SA music legend, Johnny Clegg, headlined the event which drew in thousands of music lovers.

This year’s Jazz on the Lake also included a special feature dedicated to celebrating women by paying tribute to Brenda Fassie’s heritage and memory.

Earlier in the month Johannesburg Arts Alive International Festival together with Skonyana and Muthaland Productions launched the ‘Can you sing like Mabbr’ talent competition as part of the Brenda Fassie Legacy project.

Winners of the competition, the tribal group from Rustenberg, African Rhythms, performed their rendition of a Brenda Fassie song – the song which not only won them the competition but a song which has been recorded and submitted to radio stations for airplay.

After performing, the group spoke to The Gazette. With a different rhythm from most popular South African music, the group said it didn’t plan on changing their look or sound to fit in. But, instead planned on changing the music industry which was dominated by house, kwaito and hip-hop.

Members of the public partied to the sounds of African Rhythms and many other performers on the sunny Sunday afternoon.
