Local PI to reveal financial crimes problems

Orange Grove resident and . IRS Forensic Investigations chairperson Chad Thomas will highlight the problem of financial crimes in South Africa and the challenges of fighting organised crime in a Fraud and Corruption conference.

The conference will be held on 30 and 31 October at Indaba Hotel in Fourways. The investigations veteran will be sharing the stage and ideas with other guests such as Deputy Public Protector, Advocate Sifiso Malunga, who commenced his seven-year term in 2012. Danny Myburgh, managing director of Cyanre –the computer lab – as well as many well-known investigators.

The conference will discuss cutting-edge strategies for dealing with money laundering and corruption; supply chain and procurement fraud; an explanation of trends; and fraudulent schemes in the public and private sectors; and how the latest public debate around corruption is impacting on businesses in the country.

Thomas has 22 years investigations experience and has received numerous accolades.

He said, “Amongst the accolades is a South African Corps of Military Police Merit Award for Outstanding Service to the Republic, August 1994;and a Gold Medal of Bravery, Security Officers’ Board (now Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority) bestowed upon me by the Deputy Minister of Safety and Security, Joe Mathews, in 1998.”

He was was a finalist in the MTN radio awards for best news and actuality presenter and actuality producer for the radio show he presents at Chai FM, the Corruption Busters, in 2014.

After leaving the employment of the South African National Defence Force in 1994, Thomas was appointed head of security and investigations for Standard Bank Property Fund Managers. He joined BoE as head of forensic investigations for their insurance division trading as N!Sureline.

Thomas said, “I was also responsible for group Fidelity Guarantee Insurance for NBS Bank and Boland Bank. In 2000 I was appointed general manager of Stallion Investigations, and in 2001 I launched IRS.”

He has been interviewed on Carte Blanche and ENCA for many cases, including the ongoing Oscar Pistorius case, offering expert opinion. He has been on numerous radio stations for the same purpose.
