Father assaults KES pupil after rugby game – pupil hospitalised

HOUGHTON – A King Edward VII School pupil was hospitalised after a man allegedly stormed onto a rugby field and assaulted him during a game.

Grade 11 pupil at the school, Matthew Germishuizen was reportedly hospitalised for a number of days after the alleged assault by a father of one of the opposing team members.

Beeld reported that Germishuizen was playing for Germiston Simmer rugby club U18 team against Roodepoort rugby club on 23 August. A red card was given to a Roodepoort player and his father allegedly walked onto the field and assaulted Germishuizen.

Maroela Media reported that the 17-year-old lost two teeth and was transported by paramedics to the Union Hospital. He allegedly suffered a broken nose and eye socket, concussion and swelling of the brain, and had to undergo surgery for his broken nose.

The Golden Lions rugby union is expected to hold a disciplinary hearing into the matter.

Because the rugby match was a club match, rather than a school match, King Edward VII School indicated that they had been instructed not to comment on the matter.

  1. What an utter disgrace to the Gentleman’s Game. South Africa is currently blighted by similar incidents at club level, and they seem to be isolated to rugby pitches on this land, if you were to keep up with trends across the rugby world. Too many frustrated people are venting their frustrations the wrong way, and are spoiling the joy for everyone else. Pathetic.
