Revamp for Dan Pienaar Park

City Parks are planning to revamp the Dan Pienaar Park in Sandringham which has been ‘Under utsilised’ for some years.

Ward 72 councillor, Steven Kruger, said that while City Parks was planning a limited upgrade of the park, residents needed to give their input in the new development.

“There has been an initial consultation with a small focus group of residents, and following on from that, a proposal for the park has been developed,” Kruger said.

“Residents are invited to a meeting to be held on 9 September at 6pm at Jabula Recreation Centre in Sandringham, where the plan will be discussed.”

He said it was important to keep in mind that options were limited due to the groundwater problem in the area. Kruger said the consensus with regards to the theme of the park was that it should be a nature park suitable for family use with a secure children’s area in a more visible spot.

“The requests pertaining to the park included a fence around the park to prevent vehicles from driving into the park, providing litter bins and benches, investigate the source of the water and the possibility of reviving a dam for fishing purposes, and the addition of signage for the park, including bylaws for no cars and bicycles,” Kruger said.

He added that residents had requested that no braai areas were to be provided in the plan and that there was no need for more trees. He added that a bird life signage board was needed.

Kruger said that the park would continue to be open to everyone. “So it will benefit residents in all the neighbouring suburbs including Sydenham, Orange Grove, Glenhazel, Fairmount, Glensan and Silvamonte. The park is presently under-utilised, and has very little playground equipment. Also because the fence has gaps in it, there is a problem with cars driving into the park. There is also a problem with groundwater, which causes part of the park to be very wet, and in sections there are pools of water.”
