Three new baby lions for Joburg Zoo

SAXONWOLD – Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo is ecstatic after acquiring Letaba, a white male lion cub and his sisters Sabi and Jubba which were born on 12 April this year and donated to the Joburg Zoo.

The playful triplets which have just come out of quarantine are on view to visitors at the zoo.

The popular Anglo Gold Lion enclosure has been fitted to meet the specific needs of the new cubs which will form a critical part of the zoo’s conservation and education programmes.

The curator responsible for the management of the big cats at the zoo, Agnes Maluleke said, “We are so excited to have the lion cubs. It has been over five years since the zoo has had cubs and our adult lions are ageing. These cubs of a new bloodline will ensure the continuation of the species in our collection.”

The zoo currently has seven adult lions that have surpassed their natural life expectancy for the wild and have not bred in the past five years.

The new cubs will offer visitors to the zoo another opportunity to contribute to conservation.

Will you be going to the Zoo to visit the cubs?
