Police instill values

GREENSIDE – PARKVIEW Police are instilling values in children from a young age – before negative behavioural habits develop.

They visited Greenside Primary School to speak to pupils about safety and the law. In a fun and friendly manner, Sergeant Iris Phoko highlighted some of the challenges pupils may face at school and at home, such bullying, theft and abuse.

School principal, Dave Osburn said they had an ongoing relationship with the police station and the regular visits were beneficial.

“[Pupils] can see [the police] as a friendly face and not a scary person, that it’s actually somebody who speaks like a mother and is a normal human being. Hopefully something of the message will sink in and make a difference in their lives,” he said.

Phoko explained the types of bullying pupils may suffer from and what to do when they are bullied, and she encouraged the pupils to report anything that made them uncomfortable to their teachers. In the interactive session, pupils were informed of the dangers and repercussions of being involved in unlawful activities.
