VIDEO: Payton (2) hears sound for the first time in months

LINKSFIELD: Payton Peters (2) has been finally introduced to sound for the first time in more than a year.

The Linksfield resident had one of her external sound processors switched on, three weeks after undergoing a cochlear implant.

Her mother, Michelle van Zyl, said she was excited and grateful to everyone that made it possible for her little girl to have the operation. She said, “Such an exciting day today. Thank you to everyone for making today possible for us and especially for our angel Payton. We are so blessed to have so many special, caring people in our lives. Payton is receiving such a miraculous gift today which would never have been possible without all of you.”

She shared a video of her daughter being introduced to sound in different frequencies with her followers on Facebook. Her post read: “It was incredible… Made all the months of fundraising worthwhile.”

Payton lost her hearing in May last year after a respiratory infection.

Since their medical aid would not cover any of the medical costs, Van Zyl and her family have had to set up fundraising projects and events to raise more than R750 000 to pay for their daughter’s operation, as well as other costs related to it.

In the article, Hope to hear, week ending 4 July, Van Zyl said her family also gained strength in meeting parents that were going through the same processes as they were.

Parents of Owen Obersholster, Brandon and Tasmyn sent their messages of support to Peters, wishing her family all the best for what they call the ‘switch-on’. Their son had a cochlear implant and was expected to have his device switched on soon.

Although Peters is well underway to fully recognising sound and communicating, her parents still need to raise money for her speech therapy sessions as well as other medical costs.

Members of the community are invited to the Help Payton Hear auction to take place on 23 August at Broadacres shopping centre from 10.30am.
