King David should not be judged by isolated events: Head boy

VICTORY PARK – The head boy of King David High School Victory Park, Jonti Strimling believes the school should not be judged by isolated events.

This follows mixed reactions to deputy head boy, Joshua Broomberg, who showed support for the Palestinian people by wearing a Palestinian scarf at the World Schools Debating Championships in Thailand.

In a statement on his Facebook page, Strimling said, “I believe that our institution should not be judged by isolated events. Let us be judged by the values that we have stood for in the past and will continue to stand for in the future – pride in our heritage and an indestructible connection to the State of Israel.

“Let us be judged by the true menschen [people of integrity and honour] who have passed through these gates, learnt from these values and left their indelible mark on humanity.”

The ANC, however, applauded Broomberg for embodying South Africa’s constitutional principles.

“The African National Congress applauds the principled stance taken by these students to voice their opposition to the injustice of the Israeli aggression against the defenceless people of Palestine,” said party spokesperson Zizi Kodwa.

Meanwhile, the South African Board of Jewish Education said the matter had been closed and no further action would be taken. “We appreciate [Broomberg’s] clarification to the community and he has further submitted an apology to his school for his actions. His apology has been accepted,” said the board in a statement.
