Cook up a storm at Greek vegetarian class

JOBURG - Foodies, grab your aprons and get ready to explore the fragrant, flavourful delights of Greek vegetarian cooking.

Participants can look forward to a hands-on experience as Ancient Secrets’, Ishavara Dhayan guides them through a traditional menu at the five-hour cooking class in September.

Dhayan said Greece had a long tradition of vegetarian food.

“Many of the ancient Greeks, such as Plato and Pythagoras, were vegetarians,” he said.

“We will explore a unique cuisine [that was] influenced by the ancient Greeks, the Byzantines, and the Ottomans; [a cuisine] from the land of lemons, bay leaves, goat’s cheese, olives, basil, honey, garlic, sage, thyme, yoghurt and vines.”

The cooking class menu will include:

Moussaka (aubergine casserole)

Spanakopita (spinach pies)

Yemistes (bell peppers stuffed with rice and pine nuts)

Papoutzakia (stuffed courgettes)

Saganaki (fried halloumi cheese)

Xtipiti (baked feta cheese)

Xoriatikisalata (traditional village salad)

Samos baklava (walnut dessert)

Participants will need to bring an apron and a pen.

The Greek vegetarian cooking class will take place on 14 September at Leafy Greens Cafe at Casalinga, Rocky Ridge Road, Muldersdrift, from 10am until 3pm.
