Residents celebrate as noisy church relocates

ROUXVILLE - Some Rouxville residents said they could now enjoy peace and quite in their homes.

This after the church, Winners Chapel International moved from its premises on Louis Botha.

In the article, Church ignores order, week ending 14 March, it was reported that the church had ignored an order by the South Gauteng High Court to discontinue using the premises and to demolish any alterations made to the building.

At the time, Michael Belling, a resident, told the paper that the order had expired without the church showing any signs of action.

He said although it was a long and hard battle, he was glad that the church had finally moved, and happy that he and other residents would enjoy some peace and quiet. He said, “The constant noise, loud music and the traffic interference on Louis Botha Avenue are now gone, leaving peace and quiet in the area. “Neighbours living near the premises are no longer woken up at 6 o’clock on Sunday mornings, or disturbed late at night or weekend afternoons, and are now able to live normally.”

The church has now relocated to Wynberg.

Another resident who did not want to be named echoed Belling’s sentiment, adding that she was relieved that the church moved in time for the BRT route construction to take place on Louis Botha. She said, “With all the construction activities in that area of the road, it was going to be an impossible mission getting through that area on Sundays as only a single lane is open to traffic now.”

However, another resident who requested anonymity felt that the church was being targeted. In a letter to the editor she wrote, “… What is also interesting is that there is also a Jewish Synagogue in that same neighbourhood that blocks traffic from Fridays through to Saturdays, and when I say block, I mean they literally close off the road and one has to go all the way around to get access to the main road, Louis Botha”.

Belling thanked Christine Walters, a councillor for her contribution in getting the church to move.
