A cigarette delivery driver was left traumatised following a botched robbery in Hillbrow.

The driver who could not be identified due to to legal reasons, told the North Eastern Tribune that he was trying to park at the corner of Wanderers and Plein streets when two men approached his car, with one pointing a gun at him.

He said the two men forced their way into the car with one of them taking control of the vehicle.

The visibly distressed driver said the hijackers were busy communicating with their accomplices while they were driving until they parked the car in Nugget Street next to a Toyota Quantum. He said the two suspects were joined by three men getting out of the Quantum who he believed were going to offload the cigarettes from his car into the minibus.

The driver said, “I am still shocked, to have a gun pointed at you is not a good experience at all. Now I will have to continue working only because I have a family to feed.”

Police who were patrolling in the area came to his rescue after they spotted the five men surrounding the cigarette delivery driver.

According to Hillbrow police spokesperson, Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo two of the men ran away and the police gave chase. They managed to corner and arrest them in Claim Street. Zondo said, “The three other suspects managed to escape from the scene using the Toyota Quantum that was parked next to the cigarette courier.”

When police searched the two suspects, police found two unlicensed 9mm pistols with 20 rounds of ammunition.

The suspects aged 23 and 24 years old were expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court. Zondo added that the cigarettes in the car were valued at about R250 000.
