Police warn against theft out of vehicles

HYDE PARK - Following recent reports of incidents of theft out of motor vehicles, the Bramley police advised motorists to take precautionary measures to keep their vehicles and possessions safe.

Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for the Bramley police said there were recent incidents of theft in Hyde Park.

Maphakela said there was a growing trend of motorists leaving valuable possessions in the car, and more especially, where they are visible to criminals.

“A motorist had his cellphone stolen out of his car while he waited for the traffic light to turn green on the corner of William Nicol and Jan Smuts Avenue,” explained Maphakela.

He said the man’s cellphone was on the seat and was travelling with his window open.

“An unknown man came running, quickly grabbed the phone and ran away,” added Maphakela.

He said another man in Hyde Park had parked his vehicle outside Southern Sun and part of his motor vehicle was damaged as men attempted to steal valuables from his car.

Maphakela said the man was alerted by a security guard of the attempted theft.

He advised that motorists should ensure that their doors were locked properly before walking away from their vehicles, and to ensure that windows were closed despite the presence of car guards.

No arrests have been made.
