Bidvest Wits are ready to host Orlando Pirates

PARKTOWN – Bidvest Wits are ready to host Orlando Pirates this weekend in their first leg of the MTN8 semi-final match in Parktown.

Wits will lock horns with last season’s runners-up in the competition, Pirates at the Bidvest Stadium on 17 August. In another game on Saturday, defending champions Platinum Stars will host Kaizer Chiefs at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

Speaking at the PSL offices in Parktown, Wits coach Gavin Hunt said they would prefer not to concede a goal at home, given the away goal rule. “We’ve got some certainly experienced players this season. I think it can help us to win more games than last season and that’s the aim,” he said.

Pirates coach Vladimir Vermezovic said former Chiefs striker and now a Buccaneer, Lehlohonolo Majoro would need to prove himself with the opportunities he gets. Pirates have been experiencing difficult times in the striking department with Kermit Erasmus squandering several goal scoring opportunities in previous games.

The Buccaneers are the second most successful team in the history of the top eight competition, having won it a record nine times. They have competed in three of the last four finals, winning the title back-to-back in 2010 and 2011.

Hunt conceded that they would not play a conservative game, while Pirates would be looking to get the vital away goal in Parktown.
