A marriage proposal that’s out of this world

Joburg-based director Brett Lotriet kicked dirt in the face of others trying to find the perfect romantic gesture to propose to their loved one.

Lotriet commandeered the help of Sir Ian McKellen (‘Gandalf’ if you don’t know his name) to propose to his boyfriend, now fiancé, Khalid Shawwa.

Lotriet asked Shawwa on 6 August to marry him after he posted the video titled Khalid Shawwa’s question on YouTube.

In the clip Lotriet reminisces how Shawwa made him the infamous cup song from filmdom’s Pitch Perfect, where Anna Kendrick covers When I’m Gone.

To return the favour he says he’s “Searched the galaxy to find Patrick Stewart” – from Star Trek fame (Shawwa is a Trekkie) to ask a question.

He then confesses that, instead, he was able to track down McKellen, Stewart’s real-life best friend.

The clip cuts to McKellen who tells Shawwa that Stewart “is married… but that Brett is available.”

After this Lotriet holds up a card asking Shawwa to marry him, ending the video with, “I want to explore the galaxy with you”.

Lotriet tweeted on 6 August that Shawwa said yes.

Since being posted, the video has gone viral, from The Guardian to Perez Hilton posting it on their websites.

The video is now nearing 90 000 views on YouTube.

YouTube comments on it include, “I am smiling and crying at the same time. Beautiful” to “This is such a beautiful video and may you both live a long and happy life together” and “That is one of the best marriage proposals I’ve ever seen, and thanks to Sir McKellan, I hear he said yes. Congratulations!”
