Mythical movements at Wits Theatre

BRAAMFONTEIN - Mythomania, a large-scale dance theatre production based on various myths, is on stage at Wits Theatre.

The production, facilitated by Joni Barnard and Kyle de Boer, forms part of a new fourth-year research project in Dance Theatre and Composition.

“This production is the culmination of the practical and creative component of the research project, where fourth-year choreographers are required to conceptualise and choreograph their own 5 to 8-minute work using the duet as the form,” said theatre spokesperson, Catherine Pisanti.

“These duets are accompanied by two large ensemble pieces, choreographed by Barnard and De Boer, which relate directly to one another through theme and structure.”

Pisanti said the term ‘mythomania’ meant “the tendency to relate incredible imaginary adventures as if they had really happened”.

“All [the] works are devised and based on various myths as sources, including a Japanese myth, a Khoisan creation myth, a myth around the Ogbanje/Abiku child, the myth of Sisyphus, and myths which deal with primordial stories around creation and the very human desire to understand our place in the universe,” she said.

Mythomania is at Wits Downstairs Theatre, 24 Station Street, Braamfontein, until 16 August.
