Follow the spice route through Fordsburg

FORDSBURG - The fragrant treasures of Joburg's own spice route will be laid bare on a walking tour of the suburb nicknamed "Little India" or "Little Asia".

Ancient Secrets tour guide Ishvara Dhayan will lead the tour that offers sightseers all manner of sensory delights later this month.

Dhayan said that the tour will begin at the corner of Mint Road and Albertina Sisulu Street.

“[We will explore] a Hindu prayer shop, a Pakistani sweet shop, [and] the fresh produce market [that sells] traditional Durban Indian vegetables,” he said.

The tour will also include stops at a Nepali Ayurvedic medicine shop, a dried fruit and nut factory, an Egyptian hookah shop, a Palestinian schwarma shop, a Turkish kebab shop, and the city’s largest Gujarati spice shop.

“We will conclude with an optional lunch at a traditional Indian restaurant,” said Dhayan.

The Spice Route walking tour will take place on 23 August in Fordsburg, at 10am.
