Auction to raise funds for Payton

With less than two weeks to go before the Help Payton Hear auction, Payton Peters’ mother and Linksfield resident, Michelle van Zyl, appealed to members of the community to support the cause.

She said some of the items to be auctioned include art pieces, sports memorabilia, vouchers for weekend getaways, and alcohol hampers.

She said, “Please join us and spread the word to anyone who may be interested.”

The auction is scheduled to take place on 23 August at the Broadacres shopping centre.

Two-year-old Payton underwent a cochlear implant operation on 22 July.

Van Zyl said the surgery cost more than R750 000 and her family had to raise all the money as the medical aid did not cover any of the costs. “That is why we decided to come up with fundraising projects to raise money, not only for the surgery, but for her speech therapy which will follow soon,” said Van Zyl.

She added that her family needs to pay for Payton’s external sound processors before the cochlear devices can be switched on. She said, “We have raffle tickets for sale at R300 each. Prizes include a R30 000 travel voucher with R10 000 spending money. We are really desperate to sell these tickets as the clock is ticking”.

Van Zyl told the North Eastern Tribune that they need to sell all 1 100 of the raffle tickets in order to be able to pay for the external sound processors as well as the remaining hospital fees. She said, “We are so close to the finish line, please help us cross it.”

Payton lost her hearing in May last year after a respiratory infection.

Her devices need to be turned on before she reaches the two-and-half-year milestone, which is in a few weeks.
