Richard Smith celebrates fifth exhibition with Lizamore & Associates

PARKWOOD – ARTIST Richard Smith celebrated his fifth exhibition with the Lizamore & Associates gallery on Jan Smuts Avenue in Parkwood.

The 67-year-old has a rich artistic history, he used to be a cartoonist for publications like Sunday Times, Rand Daily Mail and Financial Mail.

“In those days we made fun of politicians, that’s what we did… Then I sort of changed direction. In 1986 I had my first exhibition,” he said.

In 2003 he was a curator at the Brett Kebble Art Awards, and again in 2005.

Smith has had a working relationship with the gallery for nine years. His first show with the gallery was in the old prison at Constitution Hill. “That was a landmark for me,” he said.

Smith said his experiences with Teresa Lizamore have been wonderful and special.

“She’s absolutely professional in what she does and professional people really matter to me,” he said.

“Art is something you are born with. All kids are born with [artistic abilities]. Some of them are just stronger than others,” he added.

Since the country is celebrating women in the month of August, Smith also has a message for women.

“Women are the jewels of the world, they are like gems and they’re the most valuable things on the earth,” he said.
