A South African couple and a Zimbabwean national have been arrested after they were found in possession of six pieces of ivory.

According to Wyne Minnaar, spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metro police, the arrest was a joint venture between the Hillbrow Task Team and the Metro police’s Crime Prevention Unit and took place on 9 August.

He said the officers received a tip-off that the couple had met up with the man to receive the ivory. “They were stopped on the N1 South near Randburg and found in possession of the items,” said Minnaar, adding that the ivory was valued at R160 000.

Minnaar added that the man had illegally crossed the Limpopo River with the tusks, which belonged to two young elephants, which are believed to have been killed for their ivory.

He said, “The suspects are expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court facing charges of possession and dealing in ivory.”
