Boxing above their weight

IN SUPPORT of the Thula Baba Box initiative, six residents of Thornhill Manor retirement village packaged 30 baby boxes for abandoned babies.

The women, Amanda Brown, Madge Clarkson, Barbara Damstra, Molly Coltman, Joan Bennett and Annette Kirschner, said they were touched by the launch of the project and decided to lend a hand focusing on abandoned babies.

In the boxes were blankets, essential toiletries, nappies and baby clothes. The boxes, which can also double up as cots, were also lined with bedding sets.

The initiative is the brainchild of two South African fathers, Ernst Hertzog and Frans de Villiers.

Although the idea of the box originated in Finland, the men believe that adopting it for South Africa will also help decrease the infant mortality rate.

The Thula Baba Box will also include literature for parents and will give access to free health products, information and a system of rewards to encourage expectant mothers to visit antenatal clinics earlier and more frequently.

Hertzog said, “The legacy of the box will be a decrease in the infant mortality rate, healthier mothers and babies, and improved social cohesion.”

The women will deliver their baby boxes to organisations in the Modderfontein area that care for abandoned babies.
