The virtual field trip, to take place this month, is the result of a partnership between the 21 Icons Global Project and Google Connected Classroom.
The exhibition comprises 21 portraits by acclaimed photographer Adrian Steirn and an educational workshop that will introduce pupils to the icons who shaped South Africa’s colourful past, and will debate the difference between being a bystander and being an “upstander”.
“Steirn… together with Lee Molefi from Live Magazine will guide students on the virtual tour,” said spokesperson Liesl Frankson.
“The pair will be joined by Arlene Sher from the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre which is conducting an interactive workshop in conjunction with the exhibition.”
Schools and classrooms from around South Africa can watch the live broadcast and ask questions using the Q&A app on the event page on Google+.
“The 21 Icons Connected Classrooms field trip will be broadcast live on YouTube as well as recorded, so that it can be permanently housed on the video-sharing website as a useful reference tool,” said Frankson.
She added that the virtual field trip will form part of classroom activities for South Africa’s first Doodle 4 Google competition.
“The theme of the competition is The South Africa of My Dreams, and [it] aims to inspire young people from [the] ages six to 17 to create artworks using Google’s logo,” she said.
The virtual field trip will take place on 11 August from 1pm until 1.45pm.
The exhibition will run until 17 August at the Museum of African Design.
