YEOVILLE police were upbeat about combating crime in their area following the arrest of 47 suspects over a period of two days.

Police stated that the suspects were arrested for various crimes during an anti-crime blitz.

Yeoville police spokesperson Constable Thabo Malatji said the suspects were nabbed for various crimes ranging from assault, theft, malicious damage to property, driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of dagga, possession of dangerous weapons, common robbery and contravention of the immigration laws.

He said, “Most of the suspects were expected to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court soon.”

Malatji added that in a separate incident, a suspect was arrested for robbery. He said the complainant was on the corner of Raleigh Street and Fortesque Road when three men attacked him.

“They took a cellphone and cash. The police noticed the incident and managed to arrest one suspect [but] the other two are still at large.”

The suspect was also expected to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court soon. Further arrests are expected soon.

Malatji described the operation as a success.

“We are very happy about it as it shows that the police are working very hard in combating crime in our area,” he said.
