While Parkview police members Sergeant Riccardo Adams and Constable Sihle Gumede were on patrol, they received a call about a suspicious vehicle on Gleneagles Road in Greenside. Upon arrival they spotted the vehicle and drove past it; they noticed a single occupant, before making a U-turn.
When the police approached the vehicle, it suddenly sped off. “The suspect disregarded the traffic lights and stop signs, resulting in near misses with other vehicles at the intersections, putting other road users’ lives at risk,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha.
Police gave chase with the blue lights and siren on. “It was at the corners of Barry Hertzog Avenue and Troon Road, where the vehicle came to an involuntary screeching halt after an accident involving four vehicles,” said Ramovha.
Several people, including the suspect, were injured in the accident. Police recovered several handbags and laptop bags containing laptops. The suspect was then arrested and taken to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital in Parktown, under police guard.
Upon recovery, the suspect is expected to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court where he will face charges of reckless and negligent driving; possession of suspected stolen property; and possession of a car jamming device.
