Public leads murder suspects’ arrest

Hillbrow police successful partnership with the community continues to bear fruit as the public took the lead in the arrest of two suspects for murder and robbery.

Hillbrow police successful partnership with the community continues to bear fruit as the public took the lead in the arrest of two suspects for murder and robbery.

Police said the suspects cornered the victim while he was walking at the corner of Pretoria and Twist streets.

Hillbrow police spokesperson Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo said the victim was approached by two men, one of whom grabbed him by the neck before they took his cellphone. Zondo said the victim tried to fight back but the suspect holding him by his neck took out a knife and gave it to his accomplice. Zondo said, “The other suspect stabbed the victim in his neck and both suspects ran away from the scene in different directions.”

However, eyewitnesses with the help of security guards gave chase, and the police on patrol in the area arrested one of the suspects.

Zondo said members of the public told the police about the whereabouts of the second suspect. He said, “The helpful public members also showed the police where the other suspect was hiding in a flat at the corner of Edith Cavell and Kotze streets, and the weapon which was used in the crime was also recovered.”

Zondo added that the victim died upon arrival at hospital. He said the suspects who were 20 and 25 years old were expected to appear in Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.
