Not enough security at Rosebank Mall – Shopper

ROSEBANK - Rosebank Mall has been criticised by a patron for investing so much money in renovations and not enough in security.

One patron of the mall, who asked for her name not to be published, said she was robbed in the underground parking of the mall in early July.

“When the robbery happened there was not even one security guard in sight as a man forced himself through my window and took my belongings from my car,” she said.

The woman said the worst part was that when she approached management about the incident, asking to see CCTV footage to “get a look at the thief”, she was told the centre’s underground parking did not have CCTV cameras.

“I was told by the mall’s operations manager that the mall did not have the budget to install CCTV cameras,” she said.

“I mean, they have put so much money in to renovating the place, but the safety of their shoppers was not considered.”

The woman said she had also heard of another man who had been accosted in the same parking area.

“Mall patrons are now [vulnerable] to intimidation in the parking area. Other shopping complexes have CCTV,” she said.

“For a shopper, this is like a slap in the face.”

General manager of the mall, Roy Licht explained that the mall was currently undergoing upgrades and was under construction.

“The mall has cameras at the entrance and at some key points in the parking area but it would be impossible to cover all the areas,” he said.

Licht said he could not comment on the incident as there was no formal note of the complaint, but said their front office manager “Brandon” did receive a “random” call with a similar complaint but no details were given by the customer.

He added that the complex did have other security measures in place, including a system that could pick up possible car jammers, as well as security personnel on Segways.

“Our security staff patrol the parking areas, and I believe that our patrons are pretty well protected,” he said.

Licht said construction should be completed by the end of September and more CCTV cameras might be put up by that time.
