Local schools don’t disappoint at science fair

THE JOHANNESBURG Eskom Expo for Young Scientists regional final was held at Wits Science Stadium.

Pupils from local schools including St Teresa’s School, Rodean Girls High School, St John’s College and Kingsmead College showed off their science knowledge and experiments at one of the largest science fairs.

Grade 8 pupils may have been given some of the easier tasks, but they left no stone unturned in their quests for answers.

Kingsmead pupil, Georgia Taylor’s research looked at how much money could be saved on electricity if alternative power sources were used. Taylor said her school could save thousands of rand if they used an alternative power source.

Lloyd Magee and Thomas Deppe of St John’s College said they had to achieve 80 percent for their science project to participate in the expo.

“Although the older boys had better and much-complicated research projects, we do believe we could go through to the International Science Fair based on our research,” said Deppe.

The annual Eskom Expo is South Africa’s largest science fair for school pupils, with 31 regions across the country participating.

It brought together young scientists who were able to identify a problem, analyse information, find solutions and communicate findings effectively.

Winners from the regional finals will go through to the International Science Fair to be held from 7 to 10 October 2014.
