Film screening to commemorate war centenary

SAXONWOLD - In commemoration of the centenary of the 1914-1918 Great War, the Majestic Historic Society will screen Oh! What a lovely war.

The screening of the 1969 Richard Attenborough film will take place at the Ditsong Museum of Military History in August.

“It was the war to end all wars,” said Radio Today presenter and film commentator Selwyn Klass.

“Well, not quite, for with the ricochet of one bullet, the entire course of human history was changed forever.”

He added that, by fusing the surreal with the factual, and by juxtaposing savagely funny satire with quiet sorrow, Attenborough created a “most outstanding” film about World War I.

“The entire film was shot on Brighton Pier, starring a stellar cast which includes Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, Dirk Bogarde, Michael Redgrave, John Gielgud, John Mills, Vanessa Redgrave, and Maggie Smith,” said Klass.

The film will be introduced by the presenter, and will be followed by an English-style tea.

Oh! What a lovely war will be screened on 10 August at the Ditsong Museum of Military History auditorium, 22 Erlswold Way, Saxonwold, at 2.30pm.
