Police – Hillbrow is becoming a safer place

In celebration of the Mandela month, Hillbrow Police Station Commander Brigadier Vukile Ntandane vowed that Hillbrow will be a safe place for everyone to keep the legacy of the late former president Nelson Mandela alive.

This is to keep the legacy of the late former president Nelson Mandela alive, he said.

Speaking at a gathering organised by the Hillbrow Social Crime Prevention Unit together with churches, councillors and a youth desk, Ntandane also stated that people who left Hillbrow because of violent crime some years ago, are now coming back because the precinct is becoming a safer place.

“I thank Madiba for what he did for our country. Working together with the community, we can keep his legacy [alive] and what he and other apartheid activists fought for, and make Hillbrow a safe place to live. I also thank the community’s support and partnership. I hope together we can take to the streets and make sure Hillbrow streets are safe,” he said.

“We can see that people who left our area because of violence are coming back because of the downscale in crime… We want to assure our struggle heroes that our community will be safe. If we join our hands and work together the criminals will run away.”

The gathering started with cleaning the police station, followed by a march through the streets to House Shelter which houses homeless girls in Berea. The shelter accommodates girls who are under the age of 18.

The volunteers also cleaned and painted the house to give it a new look, and the station donated 18 blankets because they have 18 girls at the moment.

Hillbrow police spokesperson Mduduzi Zondo said, “We feel good [participating in] an international event about the life of an icon who is celebrated around the world. We hope our contribution plays a pivotal role in helping other people in need. We are really happy to give a hand where it’s needed.”
