Payton finally gets the chance to hear

As of 22 July, Payton Peters' life took a turn for the better.

This after the two-year-old Linksfield resident underwent cochlear implant surgery that would help restore her hearing.

The operation was done at Alberton’s Union Hospital.

On her Facebook page, Payton’s mother, Michelle van Zyl, posted a thank you message to everyone who were involved in making the operation a success. She said, “Thank you to everyone for making the first part of this process possible. Without everyone’s support our precious Payton would not be able to get bilateral implants. We are so blessed. Please keep her in your prayers and please keep spreading the word so we can reach our next target for her sound processors.”

After her daughter’s operation, Van Zyl wrote another post, updating her followers about the little girl’s progress. “And it’s done, both [implants are] in. The cochlear specialist is incredibly happy with both devices,” read the post.

In the article, ‘Hope to hear’, North Eastern Tribune, week ending 4 July, Van Zyl said her daughter’s operation would cost them no less that R750 000, which their medical aid would not contribute a cent to.

She appealed for help from members of the public. She said, “Even after the operation will be done, we will still need to cover the costs of an audiologist as well as her speech therapy and which are also costly.”

Payton’s family has since launched a number of fundraising projects to help raise the money required for the medical costs. These included a golf day, a high tea, a concert, and a raffle, which is still running.

Van Zyl said Payton’s implants would be switched on before she turns two, which is in August.

Payton lost her hearing in May last year after a respiratory infection.
