Swift reaction by the Bramley police intervention unit led to the recovery of R500 000 worth of furniture and the arrest of three suspects following a hijacking in Alexandra on 23 July.

According to police, a delivery truck carrying furniture was hijacked on the corner of London and Third roads, Alexandra. Bramley police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said four armed suspects stopped the truck and pointed a gun at the truck driver and his crew.

Maphakela said, “One of the suspects drove the truck and the other suspects got inside their car with the driver and two crew members. The suspects eventually dumped the driver and his crew in the middle of nowhere.”

He said the victims walked to Bramley View where they stopped a police vehicle to report the incident. Maphakela said the police embarked on a search for the truck and spotted it at the corner of 7th Road and 3rd Avenue, Kew. The truck had been offloaded of its furniture.

Using the tracker information system, the police managed to trace all the stops that the truck made while been driven by the suspects. One of the stops was at a house in Crystal Road in Bramley View.

Maphakela said when police arrived at the house, they looked over the wall of a neighbouring property and saw the suspects moving the furniture into the house. “Police went inside and when the suspects saw the police, two suspects jumped the wall trying to escape, but the police managed to arrest them on the street. The third suspect who owns the house was also arrested.”

North Eastern Tribune talked to one of the crew members who said they were delivering the furniture to Natalspruit, but went to Alexandra to fetch one of their crew members. He said the suspects also robbed them of their wallets and cellphones before they were dumped in Victoria Road near Lombardy East.

Police are still searching for the fourth suspect.

Maphakela said the arrested suspects would appear at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.
