MTN – SA and Africa’s top brand

Telecommunications company MTN, valued at R56.3 billion, was named Africa and South Africa’s top and most valuable brand.

The event, in partnership with Brand Finance Africa and Brand Africa, was held at the Brand South Africa offices in Houghton.

Chemical company, Sasol (R20.8 billion) was second and telecommunications company, Vodacom (R18.2 billion) was the third most valuable brand. The total value of the top 50 brands increased by 18 percent to R343 billion, from R291 billion in 2013.

Amazingly, the top 10 brands have accumulated a combined 14 percent growth as compared with a 22 percent growth by the bottom 40 brands, an indication that the smaller players had more momentum. The top 10 accounted for 52 percent of the total value of the top 50, MTN amounted to 16.5 percent of the total brand value.

MTN, which is also Africa’s top brand is among the 72 percent of South African companies that are Africa’s 100 most valuable brands. Although Nigeria has the highest GDP, it accounts for a 26 percent share of the continents’ top brands, while Kenya accounts for 2 percent.

And 80 percent of Africa’s top 50 brands were South African.

Louisa Kodisang, senior manager at MTN, which has a footprint in 22 countries, said they were proud and humbled to have received the accolade.

“When we started in 1996, we started as a small business. Today we have grown into a global entity, being recognised confirms that we are on the right track,” she said.
